The app is the machine's own window on the pool: what you have sent into it, and what this machine is contributing. It brings the runner daemon with it, so joining the pool is an install and a token, not a toolchain.

The first launch will complain
These builds are not code-signed. On Windows, SmartScreen will say the publisher is unknown: choose More info, then Run anyway. On macOS, Gatekeeper will refuse to open it: right-click the app and choose Open, which offers the same thing with a button that agrees to it. Linux has nothing to say about it.
Signing certificates are worth having and are on the list. Until then this is the honest state of it rather than something to discover on your own.
After installing
Open the app and redeem an enrolment token from the manager. The machine joins with its real inventory and a budget you set, and the daemon keeps running in the background whether or not the window is open. The install guide covers the command-line route and running the daemon as a service.
